Castle Hluboká

The castle of Hluboká nad Vltavou is one of the most famous castles in the Czech Republic. It is build in the Neo-Gothic style after the castle of Windsor in England. The oldest predecessor of the present castle was an Early-Gothic castle, build around the middle of the 13th century. In the middle ages the castle was alternating under royal or under aristocratic management. The old castle was during the ages regularly reconstructed.

kasteel_hluboka_2.jpgAround 1840 the ruler Johann Adolf II of Schwarzenberg en his wife Eleonora decided to change castle Hluboká into the Romantic style. Princess Eleonora wanted a Gothic castle in the same style as Windsor castle.

The architect Franz Beer drew up the project and supervised during 40 years the construction activities. The old castle was completely broken down and at that same spot a picturesque building in the Tudor-Gothic style was build. At the place of the broken down surrounding buildings and on the surrounding fields a large English garden was designed.

There are as many as 140 rooms in the castle; during the guided tour you get to see about 20 of them. The castle is during the night beautifully illuminated.

Beside the castle, in the former riding school, you find the Galerie Mikoláš Aleš of South Bohemia with a marvelous collection of Bohemian medieval art.
